Catrina’s Success Story

Key to Success

Time for our first success story in August!  This comes from Catrina*, a retired office manager and speech therapist, as well as mother of two, and grandmother of 5, soon to be 6 grandchildren. When Catrina came to Bonnie, her weight and her A1C were troubling her.  Both of her parents had a history of diabetes, and she did not want that to be her fate as well. She wanted to gain control of her eating and blood glucose. In terms of her confidence level when she started she states, “I was doubtful having been on diet programs all my life.  I wanted to do well and I wanted to succeed, but it hadn’t happened for me in the past.”  She was no longer documenting her food intake like she knew she should, and she had the feeling of, “If someone does not see me eat this, does it count?”  Catrina knew she needed to make some changes.

Catrina recalls giving Bonnie a difficult time at first.  She remembers discussing the appropriate serving size for an apple and saying to Bonnie, “I am not sitting here because I ate an apple that was 2 ounces over!” but she began to realize that 2 ounces of this, and 2 ounces of that, can start adding up.  She was careful about her food choices, but she was eating too much of what she chose.

Despite a skeptic start, Catrina started to make changes.  She stopped getting hung up with the numbers on the scale like Bonnie was teaching her.  She also started working out morewhich was a great change that she is proud of.  Her turning point occurred when she got blood work back, “It really improved a lot!  I felt ‘WOW.  I must be doing something right!”  It was her “aha!” moment.  In addition to the bloodwork, she also felt good in her clothes.

Catrina sometimes is fearful of going backwards, but upon reflection she feels, “That old me is another person.”  Her healthy habits have even influenced her grandchildren, “When my grandsons are with me, they will not even think of ordering soda!”  She hopes to lose a few more pounds as she continues to stay on track.  She now works out with a trainer at the gym and she is really enjoying that, as well as her pilates classes.  To those who want to make a change, Catrina believes, “They should take it slow and do it one step at a time.  Document things, and talk to Bonnie!”

I hope every week you find yourself one step, large or small, closer to achieving a goal you want to achieve!  See you for more success next Wednesday!
