Don’t Get Held Back, Stay on the Healthy Track

Hectic schedules and full time jobs are big responsibilities. When you’re busy, it can seem impossible to make time to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  This is especially true when you are spending a lot of time in the car commuting long distances to the office, or playing chauffer for your kids.  But don’t let the feeling of being trapped in your vehicle keep you from staying fit and eating right!  There are ways to keep you, and your body, on a healthy track!

Eating Right on the Go
• Start your day with a smoothie. Fruit smoothies, especially green vegetable smoothies, are a great way to begin your day. When pressed for time, smoothies are also great on the go, because you can pour it in a travel mug and take it with you on your commute.
• Pack a healthy lunch the night before so it is ready for you when you head out the door.
• Carry snacks with you such as a banana to add potassium to your day. A bag of dried fruits or nuts also make a great choice. One ounce of nuts is packed with protein and fiber, as well as heart healthy fats that help lower cholesterol.
• Instead of detouring from traffic and heading for the drive-thru when you are hungry on the way home, have an emergency kit with homemade trail mix or healthy granola bars in your glove compartment.  A small snack will hold you over until you get home to healthier dinner options. Having a little something in your stomach before dinner will also keep you from overeating late at night.

Healthy Tips to Stay Fit

  • Aim to walk, or even bike part of your way to school, work, or home.
  • If you take a bus or a subway, try getting off one or two stops before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
  • If you have to take an elevator or escalator at work or in your apartment building, consider walking up a few flights of stairs instead.
  • Set your alarm clock earlier and go for a workout before your busy day begins.  Sometimes even though you’re tired, a workout can inject you with “feel good” hormones that will wake you up better than that morning coffee!
  • Keep a gym bag in the trunk of your car that has a spare pair of gym sneakers, and some workout clothes so you can fit in a visit to the gym whenever you have a spare hour!

Try incorporating these tips into your life to stay on a healthy track and remember to get enough shut-eye! Sleeping less than 7 hours a night can lead to overeating and not having enough energy to squeeze in a workout.  You also want to be wide awake so you can stay safe while you drive down the road to being healthy!
