Easy Solutions to Improve Men’s Health

Man riding bkikeThe week of June 9-15th is National Men’s Health Week.

National Men’s Health Week is a time for you to take initiative and really think about what your priorities are when it comes to your health.  Not only should you focus on setting goals this week, but also heighten your awareness of preventable health problems.  If you are male or if you are a female who has a special man in your life, look at this week as an opportunity to set goals and really think about the future when it comes to health and nutrition.  This week is particularly focused on celebrating your everyday achievements, while getting healthier in the process.

It is no coincidence that National Men’s Health week is the week before Father’s Day! There are many ways to celebrate this week and it’s a great idea to keep these as daily activities for weeks and months to come.   Turn the healthy improvements you come up with into a lifestyle!

So what can you do to celebrate?

  1. Start by getting active!  Go for a long bike ride, hike or simply toss a ball around the backyard as you enjoy the beautiful weather.

  1. If you prefer being active on your own, hit the gym and try a new workout routine.  Physical activity is also a great way to reduce stress as it releases endorphins to enhance your mood.

  1. Eating healthy should be on your list of priorities this week.  Eat more fruits and vegetables; try experimenting with new produce.  Now that summer is here and your grill is in use, it is easy to grill up some veggies as a way to increase your intake.

  1. When barbequing, use less salt and more herbs and spices. There is a wide variety of herbs and spices you can experiment with!

  1. Toss out those sugary drinks or diet drinks and replace with water infused with fresh lemons or limes.  Nothing tastes better than ice-cold lemon water in the summer sun!

  1. If you are overdue for a physical, make an appointment for a checkup. Early detection is the key to keeping you healthy and energetic. Remember, certain diseases come with no symptoms so it is important to stay on top of your physicals.

  1. Lastly, get a good night’s sleep!  Did you know a lack of sleep has been linked to many types of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and depression?   Try to get about 8 hours of sleep per night to feel rejuvenated and clear-headed.
