Festive Fourth of July Food Ideas!

The Fourth of July is in a few days.   There is nothing like a BBQ with friends and family to celebrate Independence Day.  As you know, it is tradition to represent the colors red, white and blue in honor of our country.  Planning ahead for your celebration is a must so here are a few festive food ideas for your Fourth of July BBQ.

It is always a good idea to have a satisfying breakfast and a pre-party snack to curb hunger and help prevent overeating.  For breakfast, you can make whole-wheat banana pancakes topped with blueberries and strawberries. Before the party begins, enjoy a Greek yogurt with blueberries and raspberries.  The fiber in the whole-wheat pancakes and protein in the Greek yogurt will help you stay full.  The berries provide sweetness and antioxidants for your health.

Let’s start grilling!  Make festive kabobs by barbecuing white onion, blue potatoes and red peppers on a skewer.  You can also grill up some chicken or fish and top it with tomatoes and onion with a roasted or baked blue potato on the side.  Corn on the cob always seems to be present at a BBQ.  How about trying blue corn this holiday?  White eggplant is another great grilling food to try.

Can’t have a barbeque without beverages!  Put fruit in your ice cubes!  For fun drinks, add blueberries and raspberries with water in your ice trays and freeze.

Just think of all the tasty and festive salad combinations you can make with colorful fruits and veggies!  A bean and blue corn salad is a healthy and hardy salad to make. A Waldorf salad with blueberries and strawberries is another great option.

Fruit salads are the perfect summer dessert.  Of course, watermelon, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and bananas make a great red white and blue fruit salad.  Get creative and make an American flag out of the fruit.  Use blueberries for the stars and bananas and strawberries for the stripes.  Add something extra to your fruit salad by adding a fresh dip.  Try plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon and honey or a touch of maple syrup and vanilla extract.

I hope you have a wonderful Independence Day.  Enjoy your company, the fireworks and of course, the food!
