Maintain Good Eating and Exercise Habits This Summer

Woman at charity runMaintaining good eating habits and exercise is something that many seem to struggle with regardless of the season. For some, the summer brings increased opportunities for healthy habits. This is because exercise activities can finally be taken outdoors, and fruits and vegetables are more widely available. However, for others it may seem harder to maintain good habits because of an increase in all the social activities that fill up their calendar. Well, not this year! Read on for some tips on how to maintain healthy habits this summer.

So how can you fit in exercise and proper nutrition this summer?

Luckily in the summertime, there is a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in season.  Check out your local farmers markets and purchase locally.  Add fruits and vegetables that are fresh, local, and in season to your favorite recipes.  This will increase the amount of nutrients your meals contain.  Also, take advantage of the grill! Instead of frying your favorite meats on the stove, smother them in spices (instead of condiments) and grill them to cut out added calories and fat.  If you are going to friends for a barbeque, prepare a healthy dish to bring instead of a dessert.

Due to the brutal winter weather, your workout routines were more likely done at the gym and you’re tired of the same old routines right? Take your workouts outside! Instead of hitting the gym if it’s getting old, make a route to run around your neighborhood.  You can even do interval training by sprinting the length of every other street light and jogging in between.  There are so many summer sports that are considered great workouts and you and your family can enjoy them together.  Long bike rides, hikes with the dog, rollerblading, kayaking, and tennis are just a few activities that can boost your calorie burn, and are enjoyable at the same time!

Be sure to plan out your activities.  Make it a goal to incorporate at least one type of activity into your schedule each day.  Creating a plan will make it more likely that you stick with it. Accountability is one of the best motivators when it comes to exercise, so grab a fitness buddy!

Summer is supposed to be a time for friends, fun and summer sun!  So enjoy your summer to the fullest, but keep in mind that nutrition and exercise should not be put on the backburner. It is important to maintain good nutrition and exercise as a part of a healthy lifestyle and daily regimen.
