New Year, New Gimmick

Close up spray in mouthIt is a vicious cycle: manufacturers constantly promoting weight loss gimmicks to consumers who continually give into these products which, in turn only prevents them from living a healthy lifestyle and keeping the weight off for good.

Well, now that we are entering into a new year, it seems as if researchers are trying to develop a new, and even more ridiculous, weight loss gimmick to persuade consumers into throwing away their money yet again.

There is a hormone called peptide YY, that is naturally (key word naturally) released in the body after eating to let you know that you are full and have eaten enough.  Researchers from the University of Florida have taken this hormone and are using it to create a “weight loss mouth spray”.  They believe, based on experimentation with mice (not humans) that with one puff of this spray prior to eating, people will consume less food which will aid in weight loss.

There are a number of weight loss mouth sprays on the market, many of which are unsafe, illegal and have not been approved by the FDA.  Consumers need to be wary of these and understand that you do not need to pay for sprays, pills or other weight loss quick fixes to help you lose weight.  More so, even if this spray worked to curb your appetite, why should you want to do that?  Your body has a biological need for food and it is important to learn how to honor that hunger and respond appropriately to your satiety/fullness signals.   This peptide YY hormone is already in your body to serve the purpose of letting you know you are full, so what is the point of spraying it on your tongue if you already have it in your gut?

Moral of the story: by listening to your body you will be able to honor your hunger and satiety on your own, without the aid of any of diet or weight loss gimmick!
