Ways to Modify Your Diet for Improved Nutrition During Prostate Cancer Treatment

  1. Reduce consumption of animal fat, as studies have shown red meat and high-fat dairy to stimulate prostate growth.
  2. Avoid trans fats in products such as margarine, and fried and baked goods. Trans fats promote cancer growth.
  3. Incorporate more fresh fish into your diet.  Salmon, sardines, mackerel and trout are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may be protective against prostate cancer.
  4. Eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs.  These foods contain powerful antioxidants that can help fight cancer-causing agents in the body.
  5. Avoid high-calcium diets, which have been linked to stimulating prostate cancer growth.
  6. Take a multivitamin that contains B complex and folic acid every day.
  7. Avoid high-dose zinc supplements.
  8. Consume more vitamin C from natural sources – citrus, peppers, spinach, berries, and cantaloupe.
  9. Incorporate green tea into your menu several times a week.
  10. Avoid an excessive intake of preserved, pickled, or salted foods.
  11. Eat red grapes and drink red grape juice. Drink red wine in moderation. Red wine is a rich source of phytochemicals, particularly polyphenols, which are thought to have antioxidant and anticancer properties.  Check with your physician before drinking wine.
  12. Incorporate dark green leafy vegetables daily.
  13. Eat cancer protective cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
  14. Eat tomatoes.  They are high in lycopene, an anticancer substance.
  15. Use olive oil and enjoy avocado which is rich in monounsaturated fats, vitamin E and antioxidants.
  16. Eat foods that are natural sources of vitamin E.  These foods include nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado and nonfat milk.
  17. Incorporate selenium into your meal plan. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant that is essential for good health. Antioxidants fight cancer causing free radicals in the body. Natural sources of selenium include fresh fish, whole grains, mushrooms, oats, brown rice and Brazil nuts.
