The Skinny on “Skinny” Menu Items

Skinny coffee cupMarketing companies are really good at designing and advertising products to make you think they are what you need and want. Food labels are no exception. These days you will find “skinny” alternatives to foods and drink on nearly every menu or supermarket shelf.

These “skinny” items may be very tempting if you are trying to lose weight but should be chosen with caution. There are a few reasons you should think twice about falling for “skinny” menu items.

For starters, the label “skinny” doesn’t mean much if you do not take a look at the calories, fat, and ingredient list. Unlike “low calorie” and “light” labels, “skinny” is not a regulated term. This means companies can label anything as skinny.

Often times, when fat is cut, products are filled with sugar or artificial ingredients. The decision to consume artificial sweeteners and ingredients must be made personally, so it is best to stay aware of what foods and drinks they are used in.

If you are looking to achieve long term health and weight loss, and believe ordering a skinny latte will be the answer, please realize that you must pay more attention to the details of food content than what it is called on the label. Modified calories and fat content may be a result of using less desirable ingredients. Consider whether you would prefer to consume ingredients of lesser value to your body over simply having less of the regular menu item.

Most importantly, do not get fooled into thinking skinny is synonymous with healthy. All the hype around “skinny” products promotes a negative message that skinny is better or will make you more beautiful or valuable.

Health is valuable.

Being a healthy weight and of healthy mindset will take you further than dropping a pant size. Making wise food choices and eating mindfully will help you achieve long term health and weight management.

Your turn to take action: Next time you are thinking about ordering off the “skinny” menu, take a closer look at what you are ordering. Maybe you will be better off eating less of the “real” stuff!
