Walking Gear

  • Clothing: Comfortable clothing is a must when working out, but keep in mind the weather conditions. Layer your clothing on cold days so that items can easily be removed as your body starts to warm up. On a sunny day, be sure to put on sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Socks: Choose a thicker sock than your normal everyday ones in order to help keep your feet dry and prevent any blisters that could occur.
  • Shoes: One of the most important items on your list is a good pair of walking sneakers. They should be comfortable, have plenty of toe room and a flexible sole.
  • Heart Rate Monitor or Pedometer: A heart rate monitor is ideal for individuals who want to measure exertion. There are wireless ones available that are comfortable to wear and give accurate readings. A pedometer is an electronic device that calculates your steps or mileage, and some can even calculate your calorie expenditure. More sophisticated versions contain GPS and can calculate distance and speed based on satellite readings.
  • MP3 player: For many individuals, music helps make their workouts more enjoyable. It can also serve as a motivator and can help energize your workout. However, it’s important to put safety first when walking outdoors and to keep the volume at a low enough level where you can hear traffic around you.
  • A Training Journal: Keeping a fitness log is a great tool to write down your goals and to keep track of your progress. There are also many websites that offer online journal-tracking as well.
