Why Meal Plans Work Against You…

Meal Plans“I am struggling to lose weight. I have been fighting this battle for years. I have been on every diet imaginable. So why am I right back to where I started?”

These are the words of many who walk into my office for the first time. I see the pain in their eyes. I hear the frustration in their voice. They come to me requesting a “meal plan”.

Is a “meal plan” really what you need? Stop and think about this for a minute.

What is a meal plan?

A meal plan is typically a sheet of paper with 3 meals and several snacks listed throughout the course of a day, with instruction as to how much to eat, when to eat, and what to eat.  There is a list of foods to eat, those to avoid, and depending who is giving you this meal plan, there might be other rules such as don’t eat past a certain time or don’t eat carbs at dinner etc.

Your doctor, your spouse, your mom, your dad, perhaps even your child tell you to lose weight. In order to do that, they tell you to go on a “meal plan” or a “diet”. These are really one in the same.

Guess what? These meal plans are working against you. How?

They dictate to you what you should eat, when you should eat and how much you should eat. Since when does your doctor, spouse, mom, dad or child know what YOU want to eat, how much YOUR body needs to eat, and when YOU need to eat?

They don’t.

Only you know what lies within your personal boundaries, which includes your feelings, thoughts and inner signals.  When you try to follow what other people tell  you they think you need, it eventually backfires.

And this is just part of the reason why meal plans and diets just DON’T WORK.
