Did you know that today is National Kiwi Day? Kiwis are native to China and were bought to New Zealand by missionaries in early 20th century. They were then brought over to the U.S. in early 1960s by an American produce distributor and she changed their name from “Chinese gooseberries” to “kiwifruit” in honor of the native bird of New Zealand – pretty interesting, right?
Kiwis are a refreshing fruit, which makes sense that it is celebrated in the middle of summer. Now is the perfect time to learn more about this delicious fruit.

Kiwis are filled with many great nutrients, making them a delicious and nutritious snacks.
- Excellent source of vitamin C – Kiwis are actually packed with more vitamin C than an equivalent amount of orange. Vitamin C plays a role in maintaining your immune system and also is needed to make collagen, an essential protein needed for the structure of your body.
- Rich in vitamin K – Vitamin K plays a major role in your body’s ability to clot its blood and also helps with your bone integrity.
- Good source of copper – Copper is a key mineral in many different processes in your body. Like vitamin C, it is also needed to make collagen as well as helping your body process energy.

Now that you know all the good that kiwi contains, time to head to the grocery store! When shopping for kiwis, look for ones that are firm but will still yield to gentle pressure – avoid soft, shriveled and bruised ones.
