Steps to a Successful Fitness Routine
- Set a fitness goal: Give yourself enough time to reach your goals and motivate yourself to keep going on those days when you feel like giving up. Be sure to create smaller goals too and reward yourself when you reach them.
- Formulate a workout plan: Aim for three to five 45-minute workouts each week, at specific times. Your exercise schedule needs to be as important as any other appointments you have. Make sure to add variety to your routine (tennis one day, and biking another), to challenge yourself and eliminate boredom.
- Do a reality check: Be completely honest with yourself about how fit you are. Don’t over do it your first time around. Start off slow. Keep your focus on where you are and the progress you’ve made.
- Seek support: You’re less likely to bail on a workout if you know a friend is waiting for you. Seek out people who have a “you can do it” attitude. Also, a partner is good for any emotional support you may need along the road.
- Eat right: Make sure you’re eating the best foods to fuel your body—literally! Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Don’t forget to drink at least 8 cups of water each day, before, during, and after your workout. This will keep your body hydrated and energized.
