Making Your Spouse Part of Your Journey

If you have someone special in your life, whether it’s your husband, wife or a significant other, it is likely the more time you spend with them, the more their eating habits influence your own.  Sometimes it’s for the better, but especially for women, it could be for the worse.  I recently spoke with someone who had gone down a few clothing sizes and I asked her what she had done.  Her answer, “I stopped taking the same amount of food as my husband!”

It is not uncommon to eat like your spouse or significant other.  When someone is such a big part of your life, it is easy to let his habits and how he views food influence your own healthy lifestyle.  But while he may be your “better half,” the path to a healthy lifestyle is one that is your own.

You and that special person in your life could have very different hunger and satiety needs.  Instead of trying to make them the same, exercise healthy principles together, but remember that doesn’t mean eating the same foods or in the same quantities.  Supporting each other’s healthy behaviors is much more beneficial than trying to follow the same eating or exercise plan.

If you are on a healthy track and you fear your significant other is not, you need to realize that not everyone is ready to embark on the journey.  Hopefully as he sees the strides you are making, he will want to get on a healthy track as well, but in the meantime, learn to ask for the support you need.

Being healthy means you will be around longer for each other and for your children, grandchildren and other family and friends.  Whether asking for their love and support, or respecting the individual journeys you’re each on, living a healthy life will enrich your relationship.  After all, being healthy is about more than your food, it is about all facets of your life working towards an overall healthier you.

Your turn to take action: How have you asked your significant to support your healthy lifestyle?

This is so true. The times I find it difficult is in the evening when he breaks out the Doritos. Just can’t go there, yet I want SOMETHING!

I think we do a good job of supporting each other–but often I need to step up and eat differently ALOT. He loves salty, fatty, high caloric foods. So, I need to make my choices look inviting. Like Spinach salad with grilled chicken, feta, almonds and cranberries YUM

That sounds delish Jeanne. It is difficult sometimes when our spouse is eating something that we may want but is not good for us. Having ready to go healthy snacks and meals available that will satisfy us is a great plan. Thanks for sharing.

It certainly makes anything you want to do easier and more enjoyable if you bring others you love along with you. That way you have a built-in support system. It is important to include your family when you are working on a healthy lifestyle. That way you can all feel better and play together!
