The More Muffins the Merrier
Tomorrow is National Oatmeal Muffin Day! The history of oatmeal muffins begins in the early development of the United States. Before colonizing America, British bakers perfected the English muffin. This English-styled muffin is a yeast-risen roll typically cooked on the griddle. When the British began to settle in the colonies, colonists designed a new kind of muffin called “quick breads.” Quick breads are made with batter. These are the kinds of muffins you know and love today.
Traditional American muffins are made with a batter rather than a dough. They utilize baking powder as a leavening agent as opposed to yeast. Muffins like these often contain oil, eggs and are sweetened with a bit of sugar- perfect for your morning cup of tea or coffee.
Today, muffins come in many different varieties. There are blueberry, chocolate chip, bran, corn and of course, oatmeal muffins. Over the years, muffins have received a bad rap for their high sugar content and low nutritional value. But they’re not all that way! Fresh baked oatmeal muffins are actually a great way to start your day. Oatmeal is considered a whole grain and can provide a number of health benefits.
Whole grains such as oats provide a ton of fiber. One oatmeal muffin packs as much as 6 grams of fiber which is almost one-third of the daily value. Fiber is good for lowering blood pressure, controlling cholesterol levels and managing obesity. Fiber gives the body a sense of fullness for longer and can attenuate blood sugars over time. Consider making oatmeal muffins part of your morning routine to reap the benefits of this yummy baked goodness.
Oatmeal muffins don’t have to be boring! There are so many things you can add to them to make them even better. Try oatmeal-pumpkin muffins, applesauce oatmeal muffins, blueberry oatmeal muffins or banana oatmeal muffins. Some recipes even suggest adding protein powder for an extra boost.
This December 19th celebrate National Oatmeal Muffin Day. Oat muffins can be part of a balanced breakfast and are also a perfect on-the-go snack. Make sure to add a glass of low-fat milk with it!
