World Water Day 2016

kayaking Tomorrow is World Water Day and this year’s theme, set by the UN-Water members, is Water and Jobs. Did you know that almost half of the world’s workers (that’s about 1.5 billion people worldwide) work in a water-related field? That is a lot of people! If you think about it water is really involved in almost every aspect of our life so it makes sense that so many of us work with water as well. The UN Water (an agency under the United Nations) has made it its focus this year to provide more, and a better quality of water to workers around the globe.

Water in the Workplace

When you think of working with water, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind?

Farmers using water for irrigation, plumbers working with water lines and pipes to bring water into our homes and businesses, or maybe a fisherman using the water as a vehicle to catch his fish. What may not come to mind is the scientist who uses water as a medium to grow bacteria or test a new drug, a chef who uses water to cook the meal you are eating, or the millions of people in third-world countries who have to travel miles to collect water to perform their jobs. Clean water is something we take advantage of, but imagine not having easy access to enough clean water. That is a problem facing millions every day.

This World Water Day I encourage you to get active in any way possible. The UN Water provides some great educational videos and tools on their website. You can raise awareness to such an important day that most of us did not even know exists.

Here’s how”

  • Hashtag “worldwaterday” on twitter

  • Find an event located near you and participate

It’s not too late to get involved and make a difference for someone working in an environment with not enough water or contaminated water. Remember, water is life and we can help provide safe, clean water by just taking a little time out of our day!
