Summer Fun at the Farmers Market

Did you know there’s an entire week dedicated to farmer’s markets? This year, National Farmer’s Market Week started yesterday (August 5th) and runs through August 11th! It’s a week in which we show recognition to the value these markets bring to our communities.

Farmer’s markets are the perfect gathering place where you can buy locally grown produce and meet the farmers who grow it. At a farmer’s market you will find a booth-like setting in which various farmers sell their items.

Heading to your local farmers market is the ideal place to find the freshest fruits and vegetables during the summer months.

Activities Fit for the Market

Make heading to the farmer’s market fun for you and/or your family! Exploring a farmer’s market is a perfect way to get more involved in healthy eating and can be a great way to get other loved ones involved!  They can learn where food comes from and what foods grow in the area you live.

  1. Play a scavenger hunt to find different, but interesting fruits and vegetables. For example, try and find vegetables that grow underground or find a fruit that’s a color you’ve never had before. The tougher the question, the more interesting the result will be!
  2. Choose a colorful fruit or vegetable you or your family would like to bring home. While you’re there, you can ask the farmer about all the nutrients it’ll provide and do even more research at home while it’s cooking!
  3. Keep track of all the new fruits and vegetables you and your family have tried this summer! You can turn it into a game to see who can try the most.
  4. When it’s time to cook the new food, get everyone involved in the prep to keep them engaged!

You can locate farmers market in your area by searching on USDA’s Local Food Directory! All you need to do is type in your zip code to find fresh, delicious and nutritious fruits and vegetables closest to you.
