Time to Stay Cool and Hydrated on National Watermelon Day!

August 3rd is National Watermelon Day and what better time to celebrate watermelon than in the summer! Watermelon is made up of 92% water, so not only is it a delicious treat, but it will keep you hydrated in the summer heat! No wonder it isthe most consumed melon in the United States according to the National Watermelon Promotion Board.

 

I know it’s sweet taste can fool anyone, but did you know that watermelon is full of many nutrients? You can findvitamins A and C in high concentrations, good for eye health and your immune system respectfully.  Lycopene can also be found in watermelon, which is a phytonutrient and antioxidant that aids in keeping your cells healthy and free from damage!

 

Choosing and Storing the Perfect Watermelon

 

When looking for the perfect watermelon, how are you supposed to know what to look for and then how to store it?

 

Always opt for a watermelon that is firm and not shiny. A fresh watermelon should be heavy for it’s size due to the water content. It can be stored at room temperature for up to 2 weeks and refrigerated for up to a week. And, the easiest way to cut up a watermelon is to cut it in half and then in half again – then cut as you like and enjoy! Just don’t forgetto rinse the melon before cutting into it!

 

5 Great Ways to Enjoy Watermelon

 

1. Grill it –Throw some watermelon on the grill and create a spicy grilled watermelon perfect for a side dish.

 

2. Make a smoothie – Blend togetherwatermelon, Greek yogurt and additionalfruit of your choice and make a refreshing watermelon smoothie!

 

3. Add in Fruit Salad –Cut up some watermelon with strawberries, blueberries, pineapple and grapesto make a delicious fruit salad!
