Be Seen Going Green This Earth Day
Happy Earth Day everyone! With technology booming and a society that is not exactly based on taking time every day to stop to admire the blue skies above or the flowers blooming around us, let us take the time today to appreciate our natural surroundings and think about how we can be kinder to planet Earth. Here are some Earth Day tips!
Recycling is great, and we should always strive to do it. We should make sure that our job and our schools are all taking part in some sort of recycling plan. When it comes to water bottles, you can save the planet and your wallet by investing in a filter system, whether it is attached to your sink, or in the form of a pitcher, and refill reusable water bottles instead of buying plastic ones. There also has been a rise in reusable bag use which was first seen in supermarkets, but is now extending even into the retail stores. A lot of stores will give a small discount based on the number of reusable bags you use.
Earlier this month we celebrated Garden week! Growing your own produce and herbs, or even growing a flower garden is an excellent way to give back to the Earth. It also has great health benefits (check out April 9th’s blog post)! Becoming a part of the “Meatless Monday” campaign can also be helpful to your health and the environment. We waste roughly 30 Olympic size swimming pools of water on raising one cow to the size it needs to be able to go to slaughter. Some sources estimate that globally, up to 90% of all deforestation is the result of poorly managed and unsustainable farming. In addition, raising cattle for slaughter also accounts for a fairly significant amount of methane emissions in the air, between fossil fuel consumption and cow gas expulsion.
With the summer approaching and gas prices rising, start thinking if there is any way you can walk or bike to work or to do your errands as opposed to taking the car. This not only reduces harmful emissions going into the environment, but it will also boost your daily cardiovascular activity promoting a healthy heart and weight loss. Choose outdoor activities to do with your family as well, as opposed to driving to the movies or out to dinner. You will find you have much more of an appreciation for the environment–plus the more people who start commuting this way, the better bike lanes and road improvements will be.
These tips are just a few ways that you can start moving in a greener direction and celebrating our lovely Earth… not just today on Earth day, but everyday!
