Breast Cancer Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this October I encourage you to do your part to spread awareness as well as to try to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce your risk.
Did you know that approximately 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime? Or that 231,840 women will be diagnosed this year and that 2,350 men will also be diagnosed this year? That’s right, women are not the only ones susceptible to developing this disease. Don’t be misguided into thinking that you are immune to this disease because you may not have any family history.
Tackle Cancer Head On!
We all know there are no guarantees in life but if we can reduce our risk of disease, then why not try?! Cruciferous vegetables – otherwise known as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, kale, cabbage, etc. – contain indole compounds, which have been linked to lower rates of cancer and may even prevent tumor growth.
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like walnuts, fish, and fish oils- have also shown anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce your risk of cancer and tumor growth as well.
Another group of foods that may show beneficial properties are actually those that are orange in color. Who knew such vibrant, colorful foods could also be such nutrient powerhouses? Foods rich in carotenoids, a phytochemical found in orange-red fruits and vegetables like carrots, cantaloupes, and butternut squash, have been linked to lower rates of cancer. Although we do not exactly understand how these chemicals are working to reduce the risk of cancer, this correlation between carotenoids and cancer is definitely one to keep in mind!
Spread Awareness with Pink!
Pink is the official color associated with breast cancer. One way to spread awareness this October is to wear your pink proudly! Participate in a breast cancer walk this month and show your support by walking for a cause in your pink attire! Not only will you be supporting all those survivors but you will also be helping reduce your own risk. Women who are physically active and within a normal BMI (body mass index) have been shown to have a lower risk of cancer. So get out there, show your support, and keep active this October!
Your turn to take action: Include more nutrient dense foods into your meals each day and get daily activity to help reduce your risk of breast cancer.
