Celebrate Farmer’s Market Week with Fresh Food
Did you know that you can get some of the freshest produce from your local Farmers Market? Farmers typically travel less than 50 miles to sell the fruits of their labor at the local market. That means that the food they are selling is grown locally and fresh! Celebrate your local farmers from August 1st to the 8th for Farmer’s Market Week.
Before you head out to the local market, there are a few things that you should know. There are some simple tips and tricks that you can follow to obtain the most in-season produce as well as save money.
Once all your shopping is done, you may be wondering what to do with your haul. This time of year is great because there are many dishes you can prepare inside or even better, out on the grill! Many summer fruits and vegetables taste even better when they are cooked on the barbeque.
Tips and Tricks to Farmer’s Market Shopping
On any given weekend you can find a farmer’s market not too far from your home. You can always search on the internet or local social media groups to find a location near you. Before you grab your canvas bag and head out, there are a few tips to know:
- The Earlier the Better. The sooner you arrive, the more likely you will obtain the freshest produce. You have first pick of all the produce and the sellers there should be able to assist you with your purchases.
- Taste Before you Buy. Some farmers will allow you to sample their products before committing. This is especially true if you are buying a larger quantity of produce from the same seller.
- Know before you Buy.Since the food is locally grown, you will not find the same produce that you would find in a supermarket. Typically, these markets will only have food that is in season, so make sure you know what you are looking for before you go.
- They accept Government Assistance. Many federally assisted food programs offer incentives to shop locally. You can use government funds to shop at these local markets.
Cooking In-Season Produce
Standing over a hot stove is not ideal in the summer heat, which is why cooking on the grill is a great alternative. Many seasonal vegetables taste even better when they are cooked outside, even fruit tastes better fresh off the grill. Here are some of my favorite produce recipes that you can cook outside:
- Grilled Watermelon: You can enhance the taste of this fruit by throwing it on the grill with some salt and lime seasoning.
- Cinnamon Apples: Although you may think apples are for the fall, they are in season now. Top apples slices with cinnamon, grill, and pair with ice cream.
- Onion, Pepper, and Eggplant Skewers: All these vegetables are seasonal for august. Cut them into cubes or slices and alternate them on a skewer. Season with spices of your choice and grill to perfection.
- Street Corn: It is not a summer cookout without corn. Throw some corn on the barbeque and season with chili for some added spice.
There are so many amazing fruits and vegetables that you can discover at your local farmers’ market, some you may have never even heard of. Todays is the perfect day to try something new.
