Celebrate National Men’s Health Week June 11- 17th, 2012
The week leading up to Father’s Day is known as National Men’s Health Week which is geared directly towards the awareness of avoidable health issues along with prevention and early detection of disease among males. While you may put off testing because you claim to be “too busy” or “feel healthy”, try and think of it as a family issue, not just as an individual one. A disease will not only effect you but also your children, spouse, parents, siblings, friends and anyone close to you.
Please set aside time this week to schedule the appropriate checkups and screenings to prevent disease, increase longevity and improve your overall wellness for you and your loved ones.
Below are some helpful tips for healthy living as well as some tests for specific age groups:
- Eat Nutritiously: Remember to eat a diet high in fiber by switching to whole grains, eat a diet low in saturated fat and sodium as well as consume 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
- Get enough Exercise: Now that the weather is becoming nicer, get outside and get active! Play with your kids, take a walk or jog with your spouse, go for an afternoon bike ride and remember to do some weight resistance training 3 days a week and cardio 30 minutes 5 days a week. Be creative in order to keep yourself motivated!
- Get Checked: Depending on your age and family history, there are different time frames and tests that you should have done:
Age 20-39: Physical exam with blood work every 3 years; annual blood pressure and rectal exam; baseline EKG at age 30
Age 40-49: Physical exam with blood work every 2 years; annual blood pressure and rectal exam; EKG every 4-5 years
Age 50+: Annual physical exam with blood work; annual blood pressure and rectal exam; EKG every 3 years; annual PSA blood test
Take a step in the right direction and call your doctor to make an appointment, start an exercise regime and make the commitment to eating healthier. You will take control of your health which means many more years of Father’s Day celebrations for you and your family!
