Choosing Your Iced Beverage: What to Consider
Are you a coffee drinker? Hot, iced, latte, cappuccino? Or do you go for those dessert-type beverages like the Frappuccino?
If you like the more decadent specialty drinks, you probably are aware that they come with some “extras”, such as a hefty amount of calories and fat grams.
If this is you, you’ll be happy to hear that Starbucks is now serving up a mini Frappuccino. But is this really much better for you?
Some experts will say yes, a smaller size means you are taking in less calories and less fat. And if your health is a concern for you, then making this swap from the largest size, 24 ounces, to the mini, 10 ounces is a good choice.
But here’s what bothers me about this whole concept.
Remember when the “100 calorie packs” became popular years ago? Just because a snack food comes in a “100 calorie pack” doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Yet people think that they are making a healthy snack choice when they choose these more expensive snack options.
Instead, know that it’s the same unhealthy snack, just packaged in a smaller size. And if you eat two of these “packs”, which many people do, then what was the big benefit?
Same with this new “mini” Frappuccino, in my opinion. Starbucks is taking an unhealthy beverage and packaging it into a smaller portion size. No matter which way you measure it, it’s still unhealthy and an unnecessary source of calories. And, if I were to bet, in the heat of the summer, there might be some of you that start your day with one, and end your day with a second one.
Now, I am not saying that there isn’t a time and place for these types of “fun foods” or beverages. I actually encourage my clients to create balanced meals and snacks around whole, minimally processed foods, and mix in some fun food every now and again.
What other iced beverage options are there as the heat kicks up?
Iced coffee, add your own fat free or low fat milk and a drizzle of vanilla extract if you like flavor.
Iced tea is another great refreshing beverage. Or try the Passion Iced Tea at Starbucks, but ask for it unsweetened and sweeten yourself with a little sugar or stevia.
Iced water with cucumber slices or melon slices. You’ll feel like you are in the spa!
Your turn to take action: What is your favorite iced beverage to drink in the summer?
