“Cool Down” Summer Snacks
The summer heat is in full swing and we are all looking for ways to keep cool. In the spirit of the upcoming “National Ice Cream Day” this Sunday July 21st, I thought it would be nice to let you know some frozen treat options that not only will cool you down, but they will hydrate you and fill you with nutrients.
Here are some chilling choices for cool down summer snacks!
Frozen Fruit: Take any of your favorite fruits and store them in the freezer. Snacking on frozen fruit will taste like you’re biting into a frozen ice pop but you still get all the nutrients offered by the fresh fruit! Some of my favorites are grapes, bananas, blueberries, peaches, and strawberries.
Watermelon Slices: Watermelon is one of the juiciest and sweetest fruits and will definitely cool you down and please your sweet tooth!
Raw Veggies: Raw vegetables like celery, bell peppers and carrots are cold and crunchy and pair well with hummus or low fat spinach dip.
Homemade Frozen Yogurt: Blend fresh fruit and plain or vanilla nonfat yogurt. Once it’s blended, stick in the freezer. Frozen yogurt shops are popping up all over as the newest dessert trend, but making your own is not only more affordable, it is far healthier than the sugar packed blends and toppings you find at the frozen yogurt shop!
Frozen Cool Whip: If you’re looking for something a little lighter than ice cream, but with a similar texture, Cool Whip is lower in calories, fat and sugar because it’s less dense from the air that’s whipped in. Chill it in the freezer for a light and fluffy topping to your favorite fresh fruit!
Summer can be a scorcher, but these snacks will help you beat the heat and stay healthy at the same time! They also are great snacks to make with your kids to teach them about healthier options than the ice cream man may offer. They’ll be following you to the kitchen instead of following the truck in no time!
Your turn to take action: What are some refreshing summer snacks that you like to make?
a) I’m excited to learn about National Ice Cream Day! Now I have an excuse to indulge on the 21st 🙂
b) I love to freeze bananas then blend them with coconut milk and cocoa powder. It’s like a healthy chocolate smoothie!
c) I am definitely going to try frozen whipped cream!!!! Sounds delicious 🙂
Enjoy Ice Cream Day! I know, what an awesome day! Your smoothie sounds great…will have to try it out. Thanks for posting.
I love apple slices with a little peanut butter on them. I also freeze lemonade (sugar free) in paper cups – like an Italian ice.
Sounds great. I also love almond butter on apple or banana slices.
Watermelon and frozen fruit are some of my favorites. I must admit though, a little voice inside of me is yelling – “frozen cool whip!” I have not had cool whip in years and now, thanks to you, I know it has less sugar than ice cream. Next time I get an I’ve got to have ice cream attack I can use this as a back up plan.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful tips.
My pleasure Linda. Let me know how that cool whip works out for ya:)
