How to Plan the Perfect Picnic
It’s officially summer, which means now is the perfect time to pack up a basket and head outdoors – just don’t forget the bug spray! Whether the picnic is at a local park or in your own backyard, it’s a perfect opportunity to get the family together and head outside.
When you are getting ready for your picnic there are many factors to consider. If you are in charge of the picnic you are probably thinking about what foods to pack that everyone will enjoy or what activities to bring that can be played in the sunshine. Luckily, I am here to help!
5 Delicious Picnic Meals
Don’t be afraid to get creative with your next picnic, but if you’re looking for some inspiration check out my list below!
1. Fruit and cheese platter is a great way to start off your picnic. Try mixing and matching new (to you) cheeses and fruits to create a flavorful plate!
2. Hummus and veggies are another delicious fun start to your picnic or have as a side! Don’t be afraid to make your own hummus – or keep it simple and pick some up from the grocery store.
3. Sandwiches are the easiest “main” for your picnic – but that doesn’t mean they have to be simple. Try pairing turkey and apple slices on whole wheat bread, pita bread stuffed with spinach and tuna, grilled chicken with provolone cheese or just peanut butter and jelly!
4. Burgers can also be an option if you will have a grill for your picnic. You can keep it simple with traditional beef burgers, or also try turkey/chicken patties, black bean burgers, sweet potato burgers or even salmon!
5. Fruit and Greek yogurt makes for the perfect, refreshing desert. Try a mix of berries dipped in Greek yogurt – I promise you’ll love it!
Now that we have some meal ideas, it’s important to not forget about food safety!
Food Safety for the Perfect Picnic
In these hotter months food should not be left out of the refrigerator or cooler for an extended amount of time. It’s equally as important to ensure safe food storing, especially if bringing along raw meat/chicken + raw veggies to your picnic spot. Keep in mind the following tips:
- Foods that require refrigeration should be left inside a cooler with ice until they are ready to be cooked or served.
- Cut fruit and raw veggies should be kept in a cooler away from any food that requires cooking such as raw meat.
- Make sure everyone washes their hands before handling and eating food. Check if the picnic site has a bathroom nearby before heading out of the house or bring a hand washing station with you.
- Bring clean utensils and pack extra just in case someone drops a fork or a spoon.
- Prepare foods the morning of the picnic. That way you can ensure that everything is fresh.
Games to Play
Don’t forget about getting active during your picnic, there are so many options to choose from!
- Frisbee
- Simon Says
- Hopscotch
- Tag
- red rover
- kickball
- relay races
- whiffle ball
Once you have your activity picked out and your food packed up you are ready to head out. The most important thing to remember is to have fun!
