Marching into Men’s Health Week
The thermometer is rising, the sun is shining, and it’s a beautiful day to be outdoors. Men everywhere are prepping and cleaning their grills to craft the perfect steak to kick off the season. With barbecues becoming a bi-weekly, weekly, or even a daily event and the likelihood of increased meat consumption arising from this, the question has to be asked, “When was the last time you had your cholesterol checked?” Men’s health week, June 10th to the 16th was created to spread awareness of potential health problems that can occur in men, high cholesterol being one of them.
During this week, men are encouraged to work together to spread the awareness of preventable health problems, promote healthy behaviors, and make regular appointments with their medical professional. So, how do you get started?
According to the CDC, we can lead by example. This starts by choosing to participate in healthy practices including eating healthy, exercising, and being smoke-free. Grab a group of friends or family and choose a day to wear blue to remind men of the importance of staying healthy. By wearing blue, you will become part of the health movement that will spread the word and encourage others to join. As a community, you can host events about new and important topics in men’s health. Also be encouraged to get regular check-ups to prevent health problems like cardiovascular disease, prostate and colon cancer.
As for all the women out there who want to help the important men in their life, remind them to make those appointments! You can also schedule an exercise routine you can do together, and show him a new recipe. Remember, this can be something enjoyable – for the both of you. Plan a date to go hiking, biking, running, etc. Let your man take the kids out for one of these adventures, as he will set an example for them as well.
I hope I have inspired you to make some strides in your health or the health of the important men in your life!
Your turn to take action: What health goals will you make this week?
So many men are reluctant to see a doctor -a Men’s Health Week will hopefully make this easy and non-threatening for the men in our lives. My husband and I are both using knowledge I learned through Weight Watchers to lose weight, and I am seeing a positive affect on my “numbers” after eight months. I hope the same thing happens when my husband has his checkup in July.
Good luck Alana. I’m glad to hear your husband is on board with regular checkups and healthy eating. Continued good health to both of you.
When I read this, I immediately thought of my elderly father. He’s now 83, but, thanks to regular health checks, and a healthy and active lifestyle, he’s probably the healthiest member of our family! Happy to spread the word of Men’s Health Week, so thanks for the prompt today.
My pleasure Susan. So glad to hear your father is active and has and is taking care of his health. It’s so important.
