Men’s Health Week: 5 Tips to Keep Him Healthy
Did you know that National Men’s Health Week runs from June 10thto the 17th this year? Men’s health is extremely important – just as important as women’s health! If fact, many chronic illnesses (heart disease and chronic lower respiratory disease) have the same risk in both men and women. However, men are 50% less likely to visit the doctor than women, many wait two years in between doctors visits and more than 40% only visit the doctor if they have what they consider a “serious” condition!
Men’s Health Week is all about encouraging the men in your life to take care of themselves to help reduce theirrisk of chronic illness, expand their lifetime, and to lead an overall healthier lifestyle. This week is the perfect time to help the men in your life take charge of their health!
5 tips to help the special man in your life stay healthy:
- Get Routine Checkups: This includes age-appropriatescreenings and dental check ups! Just because you’re healthy and feeling great, does not mean that you should skip a check-up. It’s important to keep up to date with all of your immunizations and tests, just so your doctor can keep track of your overall health status. Additionally, these screenings and tests are important so that if needed, you have the time to take preventative measures against an illness before it’s too late!
- Get Up and Move!: 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day is recommended for the average adult male – however, exercise doesn’t always have to be strenuous and unpleasant! Even just 30 minutes of walking or choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator will do the trick!
- Eat a Well-Balanced Diet:Be sure you are getting all of the food groups in your daily diet. Aim tolimit your meat and alcohol consumption. Try switching out red meat for a lean fish or beans a couple nights a week to make sure you are getting a good variety of foods in your diet.
- Stress Management:Everyone gets a bit stressed from time to time, so it’s important that you learn how to handle it in a productive manner. Stress not only affects your emotional health, but your physical health as well! Make sure you have a go-to stress-relieving activity like talking a long walk or listening to some of your favorite music!
- Don’t Play Macho Man!:If you feel as though you may be getting sick or something simply feels off with your body, don’t assume that it will go away on it’s own. Be sure to follow up with your doctor about anything that may be feeling a little bit “weird”, and don’t hesitate to tell your family and loved ones. This is super simple and could possibly save your life!
