Shopping at a farmer’s market can feel overwhelming when it’s your first time going. From multiple vendors selling similar products to the crowds, it can feel a bit hectic. However, the good news is that there are tips that you can use to make it a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Once you have shopped till you dropped, you may be surprised with the amount of produce that you were able to secure. You may even have so much produce that you aren’t sure you’ll be able to use it all before it goes bad. There are so many delicious vegetable-based recipes you can try this summer.
Farmer’s Market Shopping 101
If you are looking for fresh in-season fruits and vegetables, why not try a farmer’s market? You can get so much delicious and juicy produce for a fraction of what you pay at the supermarket. Before heading out to the market, however, there are a few tips to know to make sure you get the best deal.
- Know the Layout. Many of the vendors sell similar products at different rates. Before committing all your purchases to one vendor, do a walk around and get familiar with the layout.
- Bring Cash. Some of the smaller vendors may not accept credit cards or Apple pay. It is a good idea to have some cash on hand.
- Do your Research. If you are going to the market in the Summer, don’t expect to see produce that isn’t in season until the Fall. The food is locally grown and thus most markets will only have food that is in season. Know what food is in season in your area before going to make sure you know what you are looking for to make shopping more efficient.
- Go Early. Try to get to the market when it’s opening to get first pick at the produce. This will help ensure you obtain the freshest produce and that the items you need aren’t sold out.
- Taste Before Committing. Some farmers will allow you to sample their products before buying, especially if you are purchasing larger quantities.
Eating More Fruits and Vegetables
Many fruits and vegetables are in season in August that can be used to elevate many meals. Make produce the star of the meal this month!
- Bruschetta: You will find in-season tomatoes this August at the market that you can slice into wedges and sandwich between mozzarella and toast for a refreshing appetizer.
