Switch it up French Style!

On July 14th, we celebrate “Bastille Day” which is France’s Independence Day!  If you can’t make it to France to celebrate with the French, going out to a French restaurant is always an option, or celebrate their culture by practicing some of their healthy habits.

The French are very good at enjoying things in moderation.  Decadent wine, cheeses and pastries are eaten by the French on a regular basis, but because they know how to enjoy with modest portions, they can savor with sacrificing.  American fare is usually served in oversized portions, with large dishes and desserts to accompany the main course.  Learn from the French and enjoy in small doses!  They also have a great appreciation for fruits and vegetables.  Eating produce in season allows you to appreciate heightened flavors and fruits and vegetables at their best!

Another great thing about the French culture is the French walk everywhere. Most French families take walks together after every meal. Get some fresh air and take time to digest the meal you just ate.

Switch up your daily routine for the day and try it French-style!

Breakfast in France is very light and small.  A typical French breakfast includes a slice of French bread served with jam or a whole wheat croissant, some yogurt with slices of your favorite fruit and a glass of juice, a cup of coffee or tea.

Lunch is usually a hot, small three course meal. Try adding a protein source such as chicken or fish along with a vegetable and some starch. After your meal it is dessert time! Dessert in France is usually a fruit or yogurt.

Dinner is just like Breakfast in France. You can grab a slice of whole-wheat pizza, make a salad with your favorite vegetables, or even make an omelet. Eating an omelet for dinner is very common in France.

What was your favorite French meal change?
