Time to Crunch into Melba Toast
Did you know that tomorrow is National Melba Toast Day? If you don’t know what Melba toast is,it’s a thin, crisp slice of toasted bread that can be eaten with a soup or salad or with some nice cheese spread on top. The name of this crunchy treat comes from Dame Nellie Melba, which is the stage name of the Australian opera singer, Helen Porter Mitchell. Apparently, chef Auguste Escoffier of the Savoy was quite a fan of the singer, so he named the toast after her!

Homemade Melba Toast
Before we delve into the many ways you can enjoy this toast, let’s talk about how you can make it yourself – it’s actually quite simple, almost as simple as just picking it up in the store!
First, start with a small loaf of bread – like French bread or even something like whole grain bread. Cut the bread into very thin slices and arrange on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in the oven at 250 degrees for 1 hour, then flip and cook for another hour. Viola, you’re all done – time to enjoy!

- Goat cheese spread with a beet and an orange slice – this leads to a delectable combination that is savory and a little sweet!
- Red pepper hummus with olives – you can really use whatever hummus you prefer, but the red peppers add a great taste.
- Pesto spread with thin slice of mozzarella – all you need is a thin layer of pesto to provide a blast of flavor with a slice of mozzarella that balances it out.
- Avocado mashed with sea salt – who doesn’t love a good avocado mash!
- Crushed walnuts and Taleggio cheese – the walnuts add a nice crunch that is different from the toast, but goes together wonderfully!
