Unwind for National Relaxation Day this August
This year has been a tough one for many, with so much still unknown it is hard not to feel tense and stressed out. That is why celebrating National Relaxation Day this year on August 15th is more important than ever. Take the day to focus on your mental health and unwind.
While no wonder food will combat your anxiety, certain foods may help you relax by reducing stress levels. Stress can impact your hunger and fullness cues as well as deplete some of your body’s nutrient stores. Certain nutrients such as Vitamin C and Vitamin B may be needed during periods of stress. Eating a nicely balanced diet can help improve emotions and mood.
In addition to food, there are many ways to easily combat stress. From breathwork to yoga to even venting, you can help alleviate some anxiety. The key is finding a stress-reducing activity that works for you.
Combating Stress with Food
The relationship between the gut-brain barrier has increasingly been studied. The food that you eat can have an impact on your mental health as well. Certain foods can help improve your mental health and reduce stress:
- Herbal Tea:Drinking tea with lavender and chamomile can have calming effects on the body, resulting in reduced levels of stress. Caffeinated tea can also provide a dose of caffeine, which has been shown to help support brain health.
- Chocolate: Specifically dark chocolate can reduce stress due to its high antioxidant content, which can lower levels of stress.
- Mackerel: Foods like fish that are high in omega-3s boost brain concentration and can improve mood. Omega-3s are also an essential component of a well-balanced meal.
- Nuts: Eating a variety of nuts in moderation can provide your body with B vitamins, which can reduce stress. Magnesium, which is also found in nuts, can help manage anxiety.
Stress Relieving Activities
While a balanced meal is part of a healthy diet and can reduce stress, there are many other areas you can focus on to help lower anxiety. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another. Try a few things to find what is the most relaxing for you. Here are just a few ideas:
- Reading a book: Cozy up with a great novel or even a mindless book to unwind.
- Journaling: Putting your thoughts on paper can help you organize how you feel.
- Yoga: Physical activity has been repeatedly proven to increase endorphins and reduce stress.
- Hug a Friend: Being close to someone you love can lead to the release of oxytocin, lowering levels of stress.
- Prioritize:Look through your to-do list and get rid of anything that isn’t feasible.
This August 15th take the whole day to focus on yourself by doing things that you enjoy.
