Celebrate National Burger Day

National Burger DaySometimes, all you need is a good hearty burger. Its juicy middle, paired with fresh toppings, cooked at exactly the right temperature, with nice soft and fluffy buns just has a way of making some people smile from ear to ear.  If this is you, then you’re in luck because National Hamburger Day is coming up on July 28th.

Whether you’re a fan of the classic beef patty or vegetarian alternatives, the burger industry is booming and filled with many delicious options.

Safety First

When dealing with meat it is always smart to take some caution when preparing, cooking and serving meat.

Preparing

  • Defrost frozen meat in the refrigerator (never at room temperature) to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Always wash your hands with hot soapy water before and after handling raw meat.
  • Wash any surface or utensils that raw meat has touched.

Cooking

  • Cook meat over medium heat so it can cook evenly all the way through.
  • Cook ground meat to 160°F. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part or center of the burger to check and see if it is done.
  • Always separate the raw meat away from the cooked meat.

Serving

  • If grilling, separate utensils used for cooking the raw meat from serving utensils.
  • Choose a whole wheat bun or a lettuce wrap for a healthier option.
  • Add some fruit and vegetables like avocado, tomatoes, onions, peppers, or pickles.

Burger Varieties

There are now many different varieties to the traditional burger.  If you’re looking to switch it up, try any of these substitutions!

  • Ground turkey – Treat this the same way you would ground beef. Add your favorite seasonings.
  • Bison – Treat this the same way you would ground beef and turkey. Again, add your favorite seasonings.
  • Black beans – Mix black beans with rice and create patties for a simple twist on the classic burger. Add egg to help bind it more and feta cheese if you’re looking for more flavor (or any seasonings you may enjoy).
  • Salmon – Turn your salmon into a patty and, viola, you have a new, interesting burger!
  • Sweet potato – Bake your sweet potato, then combine in a food processor with chick peas, onions and your favorite seasonings. You can then add egg, oats or bread crumbs to bind them. Form your patty and cook it on a skillet.  Enjoy!

When you are celebrating this amazing food holiday, be adventurous!  Try any of the varieties above, or make up your own.  Do not be afraid to try new seasonings, add-ins and toppings to create a fun, new burger.
