Summertime Salsa

salsaOne of my favorite summertime foods is salsa and the best part is that it is so easy to make! Not only is salsa delicious but it can also be a healthy addition to any meal.

So what exactly are the health benefits of this festive dish? And what are some of my favorite recipes and spins on this classic dip? Lucky for you, I’ll tell you all you need to know about this popular dip for your chips and veggie sticks.

Power Packed Dip

One of the main vitamins found in most salsas is vitamin C. The main ingredient in the classic salsa- tomatoes, onions, jalapenos- are packed with vitamin C. I know we all think of oranges when we hear vitamin C but these vegetables are also great sources of this vitamin. Vitamin C can help produce collagen, neutralize toxins, and provide immune system support.

The tomatoes in salsa are also a great source of vitamin A. Vitamin A can help aid your body in eye support, immune support, and thyroid hormone function. These are just some of the many health benefits you will reap from your classic salsa but the beauty of salsa is there are so many varieties and each has their own health benefits depending on the fruits and vegetables included.

Sensational Salsas!

Everyone knows the classic salsa recipe- tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, salt, pepper, etc. but with so many recipes out there, why not change it up? One of my favorite salsa recipes is Mango Salsa. All it calls for is some ripe mango, seeded jalapenos, red onion, bell pepper, lime juice, cilantro, and salt and pepper.

Another favorite is Chunky Corn Salsa. Mix together some fresh corn kernels, red onion, jalapeno, lime juice, cilantro, and salt and pepper. Both of these salsas are delightful on top of a grilled chicken breast, served on top of a fish taco, or mixed into a salad in place of a dressing. These are great ways to add big flavors to your meals while getting in your vitamins and minerals in place of calorie-laden dressings and sauces.

So next time you’re looking to spice up your meal, try one of these healthful salsa recipes!
