Burger It Up

The warm weather calls for longer daylight time, playing sports outside, visiting the beach, camping trips and of course, plenty of barbeques filled with delicious food like hamburgers!  The fluffy bun, crunchy lettuce, sweet tomato and smoky beef patty topped off with a slice of melted cheese is a classic favorite and staple in any backyard gathering.  No wonder this sandwich is quite popular – look at all those bursts of flavors!

Celebrate National Burger Day (May 28th) this year a little differently by putting the traditional beef to the side and trying something new. You’ll be questioning why you haven’t done so any sooner.

3 Tips To Make The Most Out Of Your Burgers

1. Add lots of veggies – A burger is not a burger without the lettuce and tomato.  Keep your sandwich nutritious by trying other greens such as kale, spinach arugula, cucumber slices or peppers.  You can even keep the veggies as a side dish, which will compliment your burger perfectly.

2. Make use of spices & herbs – Using different meats or meat substitutes does not mean it will taste any less delicious than a beef patty.  Spice up your own patties with several spices/herbs like cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper, oregano, paprika or thyme.  This will help bring out its flavors and juices.

3. Try making sliders – Lets face it – this isn’t the only food you’ll find at barbeques, so try making mini sliders of different kinds of burgers.  This way, you won’t be stuffed by your next meal, you can make a variety for people to taste and not to mention, they’re super cute!

3 Alternatives To The Traditional Beef Patty

1. Poultry & Lamb – These are typically leaner cuts in comparison to beef.  Aside from chicken patties, you could try turkey, duck or lamb.

2. Fish – This is another great source of protein that you can swap; use tilapia, white fish or salmon patties.

3. Legumes & Veggies – You can use store bought veggie patties or you can make your own!  Explore from a range of legumes and veggies such as black beans, chickpeas, lentils, Portobello mushrooms, beets, broccoli, peas and carrots!

Burger season is here, so what a better time to spice up your burgers.  Surprise your guests with these tasty alternatives or serve them for lunch to your kids.  Share your burger creations with those around you!
