Cancer Control Month: Time to Keep Your Health In Check

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in every four deaths in the U.S. is due to cancer.  In addition, the American Cancer Society states that the expected diagnosis of new cancer cases in 2019 is over 1.7 million.  Despite cancer being the second most common cause of death in the U.S., there is a lot you can do to reduce your risk!

 

April is National Cancer Control Month, which serves as a reminder for you to think about self-care and what you’re doing to help keep your mind and body nourished and well.  And why is this important?  By bringing awareness and promoting good health – both physical and mental – you are able to lessen your risk and improve the prevention of cancer.

 

4 Ways You Can Decrease Your Risk For Cancer

 

1. Get Moving!

Many studies have shown that being physically active keeps your heart healthy and helps lower the risk of developing cancer.  It reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other diseases that are risk factors for cancer.  It also improves hormone levels, reduces inflammation and overall strengthens your immune system function.

The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of physical activity per week or 30 minutes per day, 5 times a week.  Take a brisk walk, ride a bike, mow the lawn, do some gardening or household chores, try out whatever keeps you moving.

 

2. Fuel Your Body With Nutritious Foods Daily

What you choose to eat plays a significant role in prevention.  Consume nutrient-rich foods that are filled with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that boost your immune system.  You can do so by incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables which are filled with fiber for digestive health, whole grains, legumes, using more leaner cuts of meats such as chicken, turkey, fish and less processed meats, and sticking to healthier fats such as avocados, olive oil, nuts, and much more.

 

3. Schedule Regular Check-Ups

Get your regular health exams and get screened when needed.  Early detection of any disease and or cancer is key.  It can be so easy to put off that doctor’s appointment when you have a busy schedule, but remember, your health should be a priority!

 

4. De-stress and Unwind

Along with taking care of your physical health, it’s important to keep your mental health in-check as well. Aim to take some time for yourself every day doing something that calms you – reading a book, taking a walk, talking with loved ones, or meditating. By putting in the work to maintain your mental health, you’ll find your physical health may benefit as well.

 

Living a well-rounded lifestyle and practicing self-care is crucial for your health.  Focus on your own well-being and don’t neglect taking these preventative measures!
