Celebrate Healthy Weight Week

HEALTHYWEIGHT WEEKHealthy Weight Week was celebrated the week of January 18th through the 22nd. I know it’s now January 31st, and I’m a bit late with this, but I had some website issues and the blog never posted. So, because this week is so important, I decided to post the blog today that was supposed to go live during Healthy Weight Week!

What Is Healthy Weight Week?

Healthy Weight Week is designed to change the conversation about health and weight. The purpose is to help people understand that health isn’t about a number! It is about how you feel both inside and out. This week encourages you to end your gruesome diet and begin living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle through proper nutrition, exercise and self-care.

Why is Healthy Weight Week Important?

In the United States, our society’s view of an “ideal body” drives the nationwide obsession with body weight. Both men and women struggle with body image issues. Almost 6 of 10 American men and women want to lose weight this year. The problem is that people desire weight loss for all the wrong reasons.

Healthy Weight Week aims to bring the focus back to health and well-being.  Your healthy weight is one that is largely predetermined by your genetics. Maintaining that healthy weight means mindful, pleasurable eating, fun physical activity, stress management and adequate sleep.

What Can You Do to Keep Healthy Weight Week Top of Mind?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Be careful of portion distortions. Get to understand portion sizes so that you know when you are eating past a reasonable limit.
  • Start a food diary. Write down all of the foods with measurements that you consume throughout the day. This will help you get a better idea of what you typically consume. It will also help you be more mindful about portions as well as food choices.
  • Research fun, engaging ways to experience physical activity throughout the week. This could mean walking your dog, joining a sports league or doing activities with your kids or grandkids.
  • Research wholesome and yummy recipes that you would like to try! Set aside time this week to test your new recipe and see how it turns out.

Spend this week appreciating your body and doing what’s right for you. Focus on non-scale victories and the little things that make you feel great. It will improve your present and your future tremendously.

Your Turn to Take Action: Discover routines that help you feel healthy and strong. Whether it be drinking tea every night or engaging in physical activity, try to incorporate these activities in your daily lifestyle.
