Did you know that the most popular sandwich in America is the grilled cheese? Recently there has been debate over what exactly is considered a sandwich. Is it two slices of bread with a filling? Is a hot dog then considered a sandwich? Regardless of how you define it, bite into something delicious this August for National Sandwich Month!

The sandwich is a classic staple food that is so customizable you can incorporate any of your favorites foods while making one. While you can never go wrong with the classic peanut butter and jelly, there are other fillings you can enjoy, spicing things up. Think outside of the box when crafting your next sandwich and let your imagination fly!

Building the Perfect Sandwich

Sandwiches are easy and enjoyable and can be made at any time of the day. They are a quick food to take on the go and do not take long to make. Here are the 4 steps you can take to create the perfect sandwich:

  1. Base: For a sandwich to be a sandwich it needs a base; bread is a great choice and there are many options. Pita pockets, flat breads, and tortillas are all great Sandwich components. Whole grain is always going to be the best choice when choosing a base- more nutrients and fiber!

  1. Protein: Got to have some protein! Having a lean protein in your sandwich can make it very enjoyable. Choosing lean meats such as skinless chicken breast, low sodium cold cuts, tofu, hummus, and tuna are great nutritious options.

  1. Toppings: Adding some additional toppings to a sandwich is a great way to add flavor. Cheese is a favorite and can be great to add to a sandwich; low-fat mozzarella and swiss cheese are some good options. Adding some veggies adds some crunch! Additions like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onions and even peppers are delicious and nutritious choices.

  1. Condiments: Not everyone likes a condiment but adding one can be a great way to add some healthy fats into your Sandwich. Avocado, or low-fat mayo can be a tasty topping to any sandwich. Other options include hummus, tzatziki, or even peanut butter if you dare!

If you are looking for some fresh sandwich ideas, look no further. Here are some of my favorite sandwich ideas:

  1. Hummus and Veggie wrap: Use a whole wheat pita or wrap and add in hummus as your condiment, and top with veggies like avocado, red pepper, and onions. For a condiment, a drizzle of balsamic dressing is perfect.

  1. Grilled Chicken and Avocado: Choose your favorite sandwich base, add grilled chicken (hot or cold) and top with avocado and lettuce and tomato.

  1. Stuffed French Toast: This breakfast sandwich will keep you full all day long! It is packed with protein and delicious carbohydrates!

  1. Healthy Breakfast Wrap: Add in eggs, tomato, avocado, and salsa into a whole wheat wrap- Serve warm and enjoy!
