Farmers Markets Matter

When was the last time you purchased from your local farmers market? If it has been a while, you’re in luck; the first week of August is the 21st annual National Farmers Market Week!

This is your chance to not only purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables, and other goodies but to come together as a community to learn more about local markets in your area and celebrate the value farmers markets bring to our world.

Even during this global pandemic, you can support the farmers in your area. If you are venturing out, there are some extra steps you can take to keep yourself safe. However, there are other ways you can enjoy locally grown produce and support farmers without having to leave the house.

5 Reasons Why Your Farmers Market Matters:

From fresh, organic produce to tasty homemade treats, farmers’ markets offer so much to their communities. But, why do they truly matter to us? Here are just a few reasons why supporting local matters:

1. Preserves our local farmlands: Farmers markets offer all types of farmers the opportunity to showcase their products to their communities. With the community’s continued support, our farmlands will thrive.

2. Benefits local economies: Helps create jobs and gives your community an economical boost.

3. Nutritious foods become available to all: From farm to table, fresh fruits and vegetables are sold at affordable prices, which allows access to all people.

4. Education & knowledge: Local farmers’ markets are places that offer communities with opportunities to learn about nutrition, farming, cooking, and more.

5. Makes our planet greener: Farmers selling at local markets minimize the amount of waste and pollution they create by utilizing organic practices, on-site composting, and limiting the amounts of synthetic chemicals and pesticides used during farming.

Farmers Markets in 2020

Now more than ever before, farmers’ markets have played a crucial role in neighborhoods and communities worldwide. During these unprecedented times, farmers’ markets have come together in unique ways to support their communities in this time of emergency. Here are some ways farmers markets have answered the call to action:

  • Offering online pre-ordering and delivery services of locally grown produce and other fresh food to families in high need communities and beyond.
  • Distance learning resources to continue education on nutrition, farming, and more.
  • Adopting new health and safety strategies to ensure customers are safe to continue

shopping for their favorite local items.

How to Stay Safe at the Farmers Market

Here are some quick tips to stay safe while still supporting your local farmers’ market:

  • Protect your community and wear a mask. Always wear a mask or face covering while shopping at your farmers market.
  • Plan ahead. Bring a list of items you know you’re looking for to ensure your time spent at the farmers market is quick and efficient.
  • Shop solo and maintain your social distance. Limit the number of people in your party when shopping. Always maintain a 6’ distance between yourself, staff, and others.
  • Let your farmers serve you. Do not pick up products or produce while shopping. Ask a farmer or employee to help you.
  • Wash your hands regularly. Ensure to wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based sanitizer if hand washing is not available.
  • Use pre-ordering or delivery options. If you are unable to shop at your local market, utilize online ordering and delivery options to still show your local farmers’ support.

Although this year National Farmers Market Week will be celebrated a little differently, the message remains the same: supporting your local farmers is important, valuable and fun! Be sure to show your support and shop local this week during National Farmers Market Week.

P.S. Don’t forget your mask!
