It’s All About Ice Cream

Did you know that July is National Ice Cream Month? Who doesn’t love celebrating the warm weather of summer with a refreshing cup or cone of ice cream? I know I do!

Did you also know there are more choices to ice cream than the traditional ice cream flavors, brands and toppings? Luckily, I’m here to help you celebrate National Ice Cream Day by offering up additional choices and fun ways to spice it up!

“Ice Cream” Types

Typically, when you think of ice cream, I’m sure the traditional dairy containing products come to mind. I don’t blame you, because this has been the majority of advertisements seen on TV and in stores for many years. However, over the last few years there has been a transition to offer other options, whether it’s for individuals with lactose-intolerance, looking for low-fat options or just looking to switch it up.

Check out the list below for a few of the different “ice cream”options available for you to try!

  • Frozen Yogurt– Frozen yogurt is tangy and delicious, has fewer calories and is lower in fat compared to traditional ice cream. It can also provide healthy probiotics for your digestive system.
  • Soy Ice Cream – If you’re looking for a dairy alternative to ice cream, soy is lactose-free and vegan friendly.Soymilk also contains the same amount of protein as regular milk and contains no cholesterol. Plain soy ice cream will make a tasty dessert, but some brands also make vanilla and chocolate flavored to help curb your sweet tooth!
  • Sorbet–Although not like traditional yogurt, it can be a great option to provide you with a refreshing and light summery dessert. From mango to strawberry to lemon, it’s a delicious fruit mix that everyone can enjoy.

Homemade Ice Cream

If you’re looking to make your own ice cream, you’re in luck –it isn’t that hard! It can also be a fun activity to do with your loved ones!

  • Banana Ice Cream – Banana’s smooth texture and low water content allow it to become a tasty, frozen blend. All you need to do is chop up bananas and freeze them for a few hours. Then put them in the blender with some almond milk and unsweetened cocoa powder for a delicious treat! Try adding peanut butter for a nutty flavor.

  • Avocado Ice Cream – The recipe for avocado ice cream takes longer than the banana ice cream so you will have to prepare in advance. In a blender, mix three avocados, 1½cups of milk and ½cup of sugar. When it’s blended, let the mixture sit in an airtight container in the freezer for 6 hours. Enjoy!

It’s important not to forget about the toppings! Don’t feel like you have to stick to the “traditional”toppings with your“traditional ice cream”. Try switching up your toppings with fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), dark chocolate shavings or chips, fresh coconut or unsalted nuts. This will add more flavor and some additional health benefits!
