A common misconception is that dairy is “bad” for you, however, research has shown there are a ton of benefits to consuming dairy. Milk is considered a complete protein, meaning it contains all 9 essential amino acids you need in your diet. It is also an excellent source of calcium and vitamin D.

Another great thing about dairy is there are so many different types. There are even numerous lactose-free dairy options out today for those that are lactose intolerant that provide many of the same helpful nutrients. It’s time to make some room for dairy!

Dare to Dairy

One of the great things about dairy products is that they contain many of the essential nutrients your body needs. These essential nutrients can help reduce the risk of many metabolic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Here are some of the micro and macronutrients you will find in dairy products

  • Rich in Calcium- Your body needs calcium to maintain bone health. Calcium is also essential for a healthy heart as it is utilized by the heart for contractions to beat properly.

  • Packed with Protein- Protein is used by the body in a myriad of ways. From restoring tissues to hormone signaling, your body utilizes protein just to function properly. An 8-oz serving of milk contains 8 grams of protein!

  • Packed with Potassium- The potassium content found in dairy products helps your body maintain healthy blood pressure, supports fluid balance, and normal muscle functioning.

  • Loaded with Vitamin D- Vitamin D is necessary for maintaining strong bones and teeth. It is also a fat-soluble vitamin that helps aid in the absorption of other micronutrients such as calcium.

Types of Dairy

Dairy comes in many forms; it can be enjoyed as a food or beverage or even a dessert. There are a TON of dairy options and lactose-free options that all contain the same essential nutrients. Here are some forms of “dairy:”

  • Milk: Cereal and milk is a staple breakfast meal for many people. Milk contains all the essential amino acids and is an excellent source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. When it comes to milk, there are a few options to choose from such as whole, 1%, 2 %, and skim milk.

  • Cheese: There are so many cheese varieties to choose from. Cheese contains important nutrients such as phosphorus and calcium. Cheese is also a great source of protein.

  • Yogurt: Other than being a delicious snack, yogurt is an excellent source of protein. It also contains healthy probiotics which help aid in gut health.

  • Kefir: A drink made from fermented cow, goat, or sheep milk, kefir is often compared to Greek yogurt. It has a slightly sour taste, yet thin and with a creamy consistency. Much like yogurt, it contains many helpful strains of probiotics to aid in keeping your gut healthy.

  • Lactose-Free: More and more lactose-free options have become available over the past few years. Technically lactose-free dairy products are still considered dairy and contain the same important nutrients as dairy products do. Lactose-free options are great for those who are lactose intolerant.

With so many dairy options, it may be hard to find a dairy food you don’t enjoy! And for those who have chosen to opt for dairy-free foods, there are many dairy alternatives available in stores such as fortified soy milk, non-dairy yogurts, and plant-based milk.
