Mother’s Day: The Gift of Self-Care

As Mother’s Day is approaching this Sunday, May 12th, its time to give Mom the recognition she deserves.  Not that this should be the only day to be grateful to all the moms out there; they should be celebrated everyday!  Whether blood-related or not, or they’re a mother figure in your life, these nurturers go above and beyond for their children and family, so much that it facilitates putting their own self-care and needs last.

As a mother myself, I understand how hectic your schedule can get. From those busy school day mornings, to dropping off the kids and having dinner ready on time, all while juggling your own full-time job, it’s no walk in the park.  However, just as you take the time to care for your loved ones, you should be doing the same for yourself!

What better gift to give yourself this Mother’s Day but the gift of self-care?  It’s a beautiful action that not only your loved ones will be happy about, but also empowers you to make your health a priority.  It allows you to reach optimal emotional, mental and physical health, which helps you be the best version of yourself!

4 Ways to Practice Self-Care

Incorporate these strategies on a regular basis to help strengthen and boost the well-being of your body, mind and soul:

  1. Schedule activities that YOU love: Don’t neglect the things you love to do! Make time to read your favorite book, get a manicure or treat yourself to a soothing bath.  By doing so, you’ll give yourself a break from your usual busy routine, keep your mind at ease, stay relaxed and make you happy.

  1. Stay active: You may already be on the move from one destination to another on a daily basis, but it’s important to incorporate exercise within your routine. Exercise can be performed in various forms; from going on a daily walk or run with your dog in the morning, to taking a spin class with a friend, or even incorporating simple activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, this serves as a stress reliever and promotes heart health.

  1. Fuel your body: Feed your body the nutrients that it needs to give you sufficient energy to conquer the day. Choose balanced meals with lean proteins like chicken, turkey or fish, whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice, and healthy fats such as olive oil and avocados.  Don’t forget to include plentiful fruits and veggies!

  1. Accentuate the positive: Maybe you have a long day ahead of you, making it easy to feel discouraged. But you can start and set the mood for the rest of the day by thinking positive thoughts that will bring about a positive mindset.  Be grateful for being alive and having your loved ones in your life.  Take a few minutes and think about the positive qualities you possess and the attributes you like about yourself.  Look back and be mindful of all these things that keep you happy!

Embrace self-care, as it is essential for your overall well-being and keeps you at your best, which your family will appreciate.

Happy Mother’s Day!
