National Macadamia Nut Day

How familiar are you with macadamias? Did you know that although Macadamia nuts are mostly grown in Hawaii, they actually originate from Australia?  At first, they were only grown to be used as décor, but later it was discovered that it was much more that!  Their husks have been used as fertilizers, the oil from the nut can be used in cosmetic products for your skin and nails, and not to mention, the nut itself can be enjoyed in various foods.

Macadamia nuts begin their journey in a tree as flowers that eventually blossom into clusters of green husks, which are hard shells with a nut growing inside.  They then become dried husks and when these fall to the ground, it breaks open, revealing another hard outer shell.  A nutcracker or other special machinery can be used to break open the outer shell to expose the nut kernel and it is now ready to eat!
