So, grab your closest friends and family, pack a basket, and head outside this June 18th for International Picnic Day!

Picnics have been celebrated for hundreds of years. Today, many Americans enjoy picnics for summer holidays, birthdays, or just for fun. However, every country has a different cultural take on how to host a picnic.

The word picnic means “meal taken outdoors.” Thus, you can have one in an area such as the park, by the lake, or in your very own backyard. Regardless of where you like to picnic, they are a great time to spend time with friends and enjoy a spread of your favorite foods and snacks.

Picnics Across the World

Picnics are popular all over the world! Many countries have their variations of a picnic, which is unique to their own cultures. Check out the ways picnics are enjoyed in different areas of the world.

Hong Kong- In many locations in Hong Kong, picnics take the form of a barbeque. The day is spent grilling at local parks or even local beaches. Foods can include fish balls, chicken wings, mushrooms, and fish.

Great Britain- Picnics celebrated here always include the famous scotch eggs, which is a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage, breaded, and then baked or fried. Many other cold food options are enjoyed including quiches, pies, beans, potato salads, and of course, cucumber sandwiches.

France- Picnic traditions in France include endless foods from local farmers’ markets and specialty stores called épiceries. The baskets packed here often include sandwiches on baguettes, cider, and pastries.

Australia- Australia is known quite well for its picnics, even having an official picnic day in August. Picnics on this side of the world often include local drinks, trays of chocolates, and homemade treats.

What to Bring

Planning the perfect picnic is all about piling your picnic basket with the foods you like to enjoy. The best part about picnics is they don’t have to be fancy! Packing a few sandwiches, and small dishes can make the perfect picnic for any day. Sandwiches happen to be a picnic favorite, however, there are meals you can pack that can provide helpful nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Check out some foods to include in your picnic basket.

Sandwiches- Sandwiches are an all-time favorite at picnics. When making sandwiches for your picnic try out whole wheat bread, or sprouted bread for some added fiber, and whole grains. For protein, you can get creative with a chickpea spread, chicken, or tuna salad.

Salads- Rather than a basic salad of lettuce and a few toppings, try out a bean salad with red beans, chickpeas, and black beans. This is a great way to add protein and fiber. Or go for a Mediterranean-style salad of chopped cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, chickpeas, and olive oil.

Snacks- Can’t forget the snacks at the picnic! Quick homemade snacks are perfect to include in any picnic basket. Try out baked fruit, whole grain crackers, nuts, or dark chocolate.

Drinks- Staying hydrated is important, especially on hot summer days. Pack some home-brewed tea, or water with chopped fruit for a perfect sweet treat.

Wherever and however you like to picnic, it’s a great way to soak up the sun and enjoy time outdoors this summer!
