Pop Into the New Year with a Bowl of Popcorn!

Did you know popcorn was once a popular breakfast food? Back in the 1800s Americans would combine popcorn with milk and a sweetener. Although this practice has gone to the wayside, Americans still enjoy popcorn in other forms!

Popcorn is one of America’s oldest and most beloved snacks. On January 19th, sit back, pop up a bowl of popcorn, and celebrate all there is to love about this magical treat for National Popcorn Day!

Don’t be fooled by popcorn’s small exterior, this small but mighty kernel is bursting with flavor and popping with nutritional benefits. There are many ways to spice up a bland bowl of popcorn to enhance the flavor and its nutrients.

Popcorn Power

Popcorn packs a powerful punch when it comes to nutrition. Popcorn is a whole grain making it rich in important nutrients that can keep you happy and healthy. Check out some of the many benefits of popcorn:

  • Fiber- If you were searching for a high fiber food, popcorn is an excellent choice. One serving of popcorn provides 4 grams of fiber! Fiber aids in keeping your gut healthy and promotes heart health by lowering cholesterol.

  • Antioxidants- Popcorn is rich in polyphenols which are antioxidants that help protect your body from harmful free radicals that can cause disease. Polyphenols also aid in blood circulation and improve digestive health.

  • B Vitamins- Popcorn provides various B vitamins such as vitamin B1, B3, and B6. All B vitamins are needed for normal cell functioning, metabolism, and proper nerve functioning.

4 Creative Popcorn Creations

The most popular popcorn dishes usually contain salt and butter. However, there are a ton of unique ways to enjoy popcorn.

1. Sweet Popcorn– If you are craving something sweet but are also looking to increase your protein intake, try this. In a large bowl, mix 3 tbsp of almonds with 3 cups of air-popped popcorn. Drizzle with melted dark chocolate, yum!

2. Savory Popcorn– This popcorn creation is perfect when you are craving a savory treat. In a large bowl, mix in 3 cups of air-popped popcorn, 1 tbsp of chopped rosemary, and 1 tbsp of grated parmesan cheese.

3. Sweet & Salty- The perfect popcorn treat for when you can’t decide if you want salty or sweet. In a large bowl, mix in 3 cups of air-popped popcorn, ½ cup of raisins, ½ cup of mini pretzels, ½ cup of dark chocolate chips!

4. Spicy Popcorn– Craving some heat? In a large bowl, mix in 3 cups of air-popped popcorn with ½ cup of cayenne pepper.

Popping Popcorn Tips

Popcorn can be a bit tricky to make, even with a designated button on the microwave. Here are 3 tips I live by when making and eating popcorn.

Tip 1: Aim for air-popped popcorn instead of microwave popcorn. Air-popped popcorn is a great way to enjoy popcorn without additives. Making your popcorn from kernels also allows you to spice it up according to your flavor preferences.

Tip 2: Popcorn makes the perfect snack! Popcorn is a great snack for any time of the day. Next time you make popcorn, be sure to pack some for the rest of the week to enjoy as a midday snack. Popcorn’s high fiber content will keep you feeling fuller longer.

Tip 3: Make your popcorn toppings! Add your creative seasoning mix to your popcorn. Prepackaged popcorn often comes with added salt and sugar. When you create your own, you can have fun and make it delicious.
