Summer Olympics 2012 Wrap-Up
For the past two weeks we have had the pleasure of watching the best athletes the United States has to offer compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Hopefully watching the dedication these athletes demonstrated in their sport, has inspired you to dedicate yourself to making healthy changes in your eating habits! Our athletes have made us very proud, taking home the most medals of any country with 104 –46 of those medals being gold. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting moments of the games!
Gymnastics: The United States Female Gymnastics team took gold in the team competition; while Gabby Douglas went on to win gold in the All-Around competition. She is the first African-American woman in history to accomplish this feat at only 16 years old! Gymnast Aly Raisman also took home a gold medal for individual events in the floor routine category. These “golden girls” are so young, and are wonderful role models for young girls who have dreams of their own that they hope to achieve.
Swimming: Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time during the games in London the past two weeks ending up with 22 career medals (18 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze). He swam his last event in this Olympics and will now retire from the sport, however his legacy will not soon be forgotten. Swimmers Missy Franklin, Ryan Lochte also had some impressive medal counts, taking home 5 medals each during these Olympic Games.
Volleyball: The dynamic duo of Misti May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jenkins won their third consecutive gold medal for beach volleyball. They have never lost a match, and lost only one set in their entire Olympic career. They faced off against USA’s other beach volleyball team of Jen Kessy and April Ross who won silver in the event with an impressive performance nobody expected from the pair. This will be the last Olympics that Misti May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jenkins compete in together for May-Treanor is retiring, making their victory bittersweet. These two women have done so much for beach volleyball and hopefully Kerri can keep it going in Brazil’s 2016 Summer Olympics! The women’s regular volleyball team also took home silver in the tournament.
Track and Field: Allyson Felix finally took gold in the women’s 200m after getting silver in Sydney and Bejing the past two summer Olympics. She and Sonya Richard-Ross also lead the US team to a gold medal victory in the 4x400m relay. American Ashton Eaton took home gold in the men’s decathlon earning him the title of “World’s Greatest Athlete.” I’m sure we will be seeing him on a cereal box soon!
The ladies did a great job representing the United States in the medal count, they are responsible for 63% of the gold’s won for the US! Some other notable moments was the first ever gold medal for the US in Women’s water polo, the men’s basketball team won gold, Venus and Serena Williams took home gold in tennis, and the women’s soccer team won gold.
Even though the Olympics are over, let the spirit of the games inspire you to set an athletic or nutrition related goal for yourself that you can work towards achieving. Putting hard work and time into something makes the goal that much more rewarding once it is accomplished. Congratulations team USA! Thank you for making us proud to be Americans!
