Super Bowl Approved Foods

This Sunday, February 5th is Super Bowl Sunday!  This is the biggest televised event of the year, with millions of Americans tuning in and hosting parties for the game.

Although the game is the main event of the party, I’m sure many of you are focused on what food is going to be there.  Chips and dip, Buffalo wings, greasy burgers and pizza are among the unhealthy foods that are “must-haves” at all Super Bowl parties.  It may seem impossible to attend, or host, one of these parties without abandoning your healthy habits.

I am here to tell you that you CAN attend, and host, a Super Bowl party without all the greasy food! If you are hosting your own party, you get to choose what the menu is.  Don’t be afraid to move away from the traditional game day snacks.  If you are attending a party, ask the host if you can bring a dish, I’m sure they’d be happy you offered.

Super Bowl Snacks:

  1. Homemade guacamole. Instead of buying guacamole from the store, make your own. You will need ripe avocados, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and fresh lemon or lime juice.  Pair it with chips that have no salt added or even carrots!

  1. Celery and peanut butter sticks. Spread peanut butter on celery sticks for a crunchy snack that’s sure to be a hit!

  1. Greek yogurt dip. Skip the crudité platters this year, and pair your vegetables with Greek yogurt! You’ll need plain, low-fat, Greek yogurt, chopped dill, fresh garlic and ground black pepper.  I’m sure this will become a new staple of yours!

  1. Fruit kabobs. It’s okay to have desserts, remember everything in moderation. But, if you’re looking for something to switch it up this year, make your own fruit kabobs that can be dipped in Greek yogurt.  Your sweet tooth will get its fix without any of the guilt!

Super Bowl Mains:

  1. Sliders. Depending on whom you are cooking for, make homemade turkey or black bean sliders in place of large, beef burgers. The sliders are a perfect, pre-portioned snack for the game!

  1. Homemade pizza. Pizza is a game day tradition, and that doesn’t have to change. Swap out store-bought pizza for homemade pizza.  Do you want to know the best part about homemade pizza?  Your choices are limitless!  Buy whole wheat frozen dough (to keep it simple), add tomato sauce and use low-fat mozzarella cheese.  Toppings can range from vegetables to meatballs.  Use whatever you have in your fridge!

  1. Three bean salad. Choose three of your favorite beans and mix them together for your own bean salad. Season with your favorite spices. *If you’re using canned beans, remember to drain and rinse them before using!

  1. Chili. Chili is perfect for the big game. Sprinkle some low-fat cheese on top and everyone will be happy! Check out my recipe for a hearty vegetable chili that will make everyone happy.

Remember, Super Bowl Sunday does not have to be focused around food and drinks.  Use this time to enjoy the company of your family and friends and unwind before another busy week starts!
