Tips for an Enjoyable Memorial Day

As I’m sure you’re already well aware, this weekend is Memorial Day, which is the unofficial start to summer! While Memorial Day often goes hand-in-hand with BBQs, it’s important to take a moment to remember what it stands for. It was started in 1858 to honor all of the soldiers who lost their lives serving our country.    Since it’s a federal holiday, many businesses are closed, which gives you more time to celebrate the fallen soldiers as well as the start of summer!

Now… when it comes to the BBQ part of the weekend, its important to remember that not all BBQs have to be “traditional”. You can use the BBQ to try new foods while continuing to eat mindfully.

Mindful Memorial Day Weekend

I know that BBQ can sometimes be a stressful time for some due to the “unhealthy”, traditional foods eaten. However, I’m here to tell you that you can enjoy your BBQ without guilt!

  • Make a plan ahead of time. Offer to bring a dish like a side dish, appetizer or entrée. By doing this you’ll know you have something to eat that you like, AND your host will be grateful!
  • Have a snack before you arrive. If you eat something before you go, you’ll be better able to hear your hunger and fullness signals and give your body what it needs.
  • Choose wisely. Don’t feel like you have to eat everything just because it’s there. Choose only the foods you know you’ll truly enjoy and pass on the things you don’t like!
  • Enjoy mindfully. This ties all the other points together.  Savor the food and drinks, and savor the company, too!

5 Tips Perfect for this Weekend

  1. Be aware of potential sources of food borne illness.  Prevent cross contamination by keeping your raw meats separate from your cooked meats, fruits and vegetables. Use separate utensils for raw and cooked meats.
  2. Ground turkey can be used as an alternative to ground beef for burgers.
  3. Grilled fish is a great protein addition to any BBQ – nice and light on a hot day.
  4. Vegetables are easy to cook on the grill and taste delicious! Some of my personal favorites are zucchini and eggplant. These can be perfect toppings for your burger or compliment any other meal.
  5. Grilled fruit kebobs or pineapple can be the perfect option for your sweet tooth or even to top your burger.

Remember that barbeques don’t always need to be about food. Fun activities can be part of your gatherings to get everyone moving. You can enjoy yard games like playing catch, volleyball, or soccer. Another fun option is to have a relay race and include everyone.
