You’re Invited to a Picnic!

With the first day of summer just a few days away, it’s the perfect time to head outside and enjoy the warm weather. And, what’s a better way to celebrate nice weather than by having a picnic. Grab a basket, some sandwiches, and head to your neighborhood park this June 18th for International Picnic Day.

Picnics are a great way to spend time with friends or family while enjoying some delicious foods. Whether you’re out spending the day in the park or simply getting together in the backyard, picnics are all about good food and good times!

Packing the Perfect Picnic

When it comes to picnics, the first question is usually “what should I bring?” Here are some items you may want to include in your picnic basket:

  • Sandwiches: Sandwiches are a great addition to any picnic basket because they are easy to make and easy to eat. Sandwiches can be as simple or as fancy you want. Opt for whole-grain bread and try adding some fresh greens such as arugula or lettuce for added fiber.

  • Sides: Having options and being able to choose from various foods are what picnics are all about. Some sides to include in your picnic basket include salads with a mix of fresh greens, whole grain pasta salad, or hummus and pita chips.

  • Fruit: Pack in some of your favorite fruit when planning a picnic. Making a fruit salad is a great way to pack in vitamins and minerals from an assortment of fruits.

  • Vegetables: Cut up some of your favorite veggies to enjoy with a dip such as hummus, yogurt dip, or even nut butter for some added sweetness.

  • Drinks: Can’t forget about the drinks! Water is always important to have on hand, especially on those hot summer days. However, you can get creative by adding in some fresh fruit or add some bubbly with seltzer.

  • Dessert: Once the main meal is finished, you probably want a sweet treat. Add some of your favorite desserts into your picnic baskets such as dark chocolate or fresh baked cookies.

Adding Activity into Your Picnic Day

Picnics can be an all-day event and since you probably won’t be spending all day eating, you’ll need some more fun activities to enjoy. Check out some outdoor activities that you can enjoy that will keep your blood flowing and keep you moving:

  • Practice Yoga: Yoga is a great way to practice gentle movement. Yoga can help you manage stress and help you relax! Whether you are picnicking alone or with friends or family, try out some yoga moves after taking a break from all the delicious foods.

  • Bike Ride: If you’re having your picnic in the park, don’t forget to bring your bike! Bike riding is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness promoting a healthy heart; it is also an excellent way to strengthen your bones and muscles.

  • Go For a Walk: Outdoor exercise does not have to be strenuous. Go for walk after your picnic to help get your blood flowing and to aid with digestion.

  • Meditation: Find a nice shady spot before or after your picnic and try some meditation. Meditating is a great way to increase self-awareness, release negative emotions, and manage stress.
