Eat Better, Sleep Better, Feel Better
Weight loss can result in several positive changes other than just losing weight. Such positive changes include increased energy, better self-image and self-esteem, improved health, and decreased risk of disease. Recent research has also found weight loss to improve mood and sleep in addition to the aforementioned positive changes. In other words, weight loss helps you feel more awake and happy.
A recent study highlighting the connection between weight loss, improved sleep and mood was presented at a joint meeting of the International Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society in Chicago. The study consisted of 390 obese men and women. The participants were divided into three different programs to help them lose weight through diet and exercise. The first group was provided with educational material from their primary care provider every three months. The second group received the same materials but was also given brief meetings with lifestyle coaches. The third group received educational materials, meetings with lifestyle coaches, meal replacements and weight-loss medications. After 6 and 24 months, the researchers assessed changes in the participants’ weight, amount and quality of sleep and mood. The third group of participants, who received 3 different types of weight loss solutions, lost the most weight after 24 months. However, the study found that no matter which group the participants were in, those who lost at least 5 percent of their weight after 6 months slept better and longer than they had before and had improvements in their overall mood compared to those who lost less weight.
This study highlights not only the physical benefits of weight loss, but the mental and emotional benefits as well. There has been an abundance of research linking sleep duration to improvements in mood, mental function and overall state of mind. Likewise, it is no doubt that body image plays a significant role in your mental and emotional well-being. Though a main goal of weight loss is to improve your health and physical appearance, it is important to note these positive mental changes that occur as well. Your mindset plays the biggest role in weight loss. With positive mindset changes, you can learn to trust yourself, listen to your body and make time for yourself. While on the road to becoming a healthier you, not only do you feel happier with the way you look physically, but all aspects of your lifestyle are healthier, from your sleep patterns to your moods and to your overall outlook on life.
Your turn to take action: What positive mental and emotional changes are you noticing in yourself throughout your health journey?
